Whether it is a breakdown, a drop, a purchase in another province or a track day, we move motorcycles across Barcelona with the individual securing each type of bike needs. A cruiser, a faired sports bike and a scooter are not strapped the same way, and that difference shows on arrival.
In Barcelona the port sets the rhythm. Ro-ro traffic and vehicle terminals run to time windows, and matching collection or delivery to those windows is half the job. The other half is remembering that port access needs prior accreditation.
Moving a vehicle in Barcelona: what to know
Barcelona is a regular destination for our work, and it comes with conditions of its own. The Port of Barcelona runs one of the Mediterranean's largest vehicle terminals, handling hundreds of thousands of cars a year in import, export and transit traffic. Traffic density and low-emission access restrictions across the city mean collections need planning ahead and a truck sized for the street layout.
Its place on the Mediterranean corridor makes it a natural staging point for moves towards France and down the eastern coast.
Loading and unloading
A bike that neither starts nor rolls — a broken transmission, a locked wheel — cannot be pushed up. In those cases a winch and auxiliary equipment are used so the machine is not damaged.
Unloading repeats the process with the same care. Whoever receives the bike will usually want to inspect it at that point, and doing so before signing is good practice.
The legal position: when transport stops being optional
A vehicle without a valid ITV, without insurance, or on temporary deregistration cannot legally be driven on public roads. The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is unambiguous here, and the penalty falls on the registered keeper. Moving it by truck is not a matter of preference — it is the only lawful option.
Royal Decree 920/2017 governing the ITV roadworthiness test sets out the narrow circumstances in which a vehicle may travel to a test station, and outside that specific case driving it is prohibited. That distinction is worth understanding before assuming you can drive to the garage.
In Barcelona it is worth distinguishing a door-to-door move from one ending inside the port area: access requirements and waiting times are nothing alike.
Transporting several motorcycles at once
Moving several motorcycles on one job costs considerably less per unit than separate transports. It is the natural option for clubs, groups travelling to an event, and dealerships.
On multiple transports, spacing and layout matter: the bikes must not touch each other in transit, which is handled with separators and individual securing for each machine.
After a fall: what to check before riding on
After a fall the absolute priority is the rider. With that resolved, the bike should not be ridden again without inspection: the steering may have lost alignment, the forks may be twisted, and the wheels may carry deformation that is not visible.
Riding with misaligned steering is especially dangerous on a motorcycle, where balance depends directly on geometry. Transport to the workshop is the sensible decision even if the engine starts perfectly.
Moving a motorcycle to another province
There are plenty of reasons to move a bike by truck rather than ride it: a purchase in another province, a house move, getting it to a holiday destination, or simply avoiding adding a thousand kilometres to a valuable machine.
On long journeys the saving is not only wear. You avoid the fatigue, the risk of a long ride on open roads and, in winter, conditions that make the trip genuinely unpleasant.
Common faults that strand a motorcycle
On motorcycles the battery is the number one cause, particularly after a period standing, because bike batteries are small and discharge easily. Electrical faults, transmission failures and punctures follow.
Punctures deserve separate mention because a motorcycle carries no spare and, in many cases, cannot be repaired at the roadside. With a tubeless tyre and a sidewall cut, transport is the only option.
The variables behind the quote
A fixed price needs four things: origin, destination, approximate model and condition. With those the job can be confirmed without extras appearing later.
On long journeys the cost per kilometre falls markedly. For a bike facing an 800-kilometre ride, transport often pays for itself on avoided wear alone.
Cover and liability during transport
A properly run move records the vehicle's condition before loading, normally photographically, and records it again at delivery. That evidence is what settles any later disagreement quickly.
It is worth confirming the company holds the relevant transport authorisation with the Spanish Ministry of Transport and a current policy. That is the difference between a professional service and someone with a hired trailer.

Practical advice for your move
Check the overall height if the vehicle is a van, a camper or a 4x4 with roof accessories. The vehicle's height plus the deck height determines what the loaded truck can pass under.
On keyless-start vehicles, remember the fob must travel with you or be handed over at the destination, but never left inside the car in transit. It is a more common oversight than you would think and leaves the vehicle locked on arrival.
A vehicle leaking oil or fuel should be flagged before transport. It does not prevent the move, but it affects where the car sits on the deck and what protection goes underneath it.
Open transporters are the standard option and perfectly safe for most vehicles. Enclosed transport makes sense for classics, high-value cars and anything with very low ground clearance.
Leave the fuel tank low, around a quarter. It reduces weight, follows standard transport practice, and there is nothing to gain from a full tank during the journey.
Before collection, check no personal documents are left in the glovebox. It is where forgotten paperwork most often turns up, and some of it contains details you would not want travelling unsupervised.
Ask whether the price includes waiting time at loading and unloading. On moves to workshops, dealerships or compounds with slow procedures, that time can stretch, and it is worth knowing in advance how it is counted.
Always ask whether the price covers collection and delivery at the points you need, or refers to a terminal-to-terminal move. The difference in cost and convenience is considerable.
On long moves, asking how many loading and unloading points the truck has helps explain the timescale. A truck making several stops takes longer than a direct run.
Flag it if the vehicle has stood unused for a long period. Flat tyres, seized brakes or a completely dead battery all change how it has to be loaded.
If the vehicle is on rural land or at the end of an unsurfaced track, state the distance from the tarmac road. An articulated truck cannot enter every lane, and sometimes the car has to be brought out to a meeting point.
If the vehicle contains fuel cans or any flammable material, remove it beforehand. Dangerous goods transport is governed by its own regulations and cannot travel mixed in with the vehicle.
Know where the spare wheel and tools are if the vehicle carries them. On long moves, a loose item in the boot shifts during the journey and can damage the interior or the trim.
In low-emission zones, verify whether the transport truck can enter during the planned time window. Many restrictions apply to heavy vehicles even where the car being carried would itself be allowed through.
Moving several vehicles together usually works out considerably cheaper per unit than separate jobs. If you have more than one to move, it is worth quoting them as one.
An accessible collection point saves both time and money. If the street is narrow or the garage has restricted headroom, agreeing a nearby spot where the truck can manoeuvre simplifies everything.
Be wary of quotes well below market rate. In vehicle transport, a low price usually means no goods-in-transit insurance, no operating authorisation, or neither.
If the vehicle is in an underground car park, check the clearance height first. Many garages cannot take a transporter and the car has to be brought up to street level.
If the vehicle will sit on a public street waiting for collection, check there are no timed restrictions or scheduled clearing on that road. A car towed by the local authority while waiting for transport complicates matters considerably and adds costs nobody planned for.
For vehicles with bulky modifications or accessories — roof racks, bike carriers, bull bars — mention them. They can affect the overall height of the loaded truck and whether it clears certain access points.
Check the handbrake works and that the vehicle can be secured on the deck. If it cannot, there are solutions, but it is better known in advance.
Get the name and number of the driver handling the job, or at least a direct operational contact. On the day, being able to resolve a question in two minutes prevents an hour of waiting.
Bear in mind that in peak periods — summer, or the start and end of the season — lead times stretch. Booking ahead is the simple way around it.
Agree who signs for the vehicle at the destination. If it arrives at a closed workshop or an address where nobody is present, the driver cannot simply leave it, and waiting time or a second attempt both cost money.
If the destination is an ITV test station, confirm you have a booked appointment and the time. Matching the vehicle's arrival to the appointment slot avoids long waits and a second visit.
On moves crossing several autonomous communities, bear in mind that heavy vehicle driving restrictions vary at weekends and on public holidays. That can affect the specific delivery day.
Where a tailgate or bonnet no longer closes properly after an impact, secure it before loading. A tailgate that springs open at eighty kilometres an hour is a genuine hazard to other traffic.
If you need the vehicle by a fixed, immovable date, say so when booking rather than afterwards. With enough notice it can almost always be accommodated; with twenty-four hours, often not.
In summary
In short: in Barcelona what makes the difference is a realistic timescale, a fixed price with no extras, and a move documented from start to finish. That is exactly what we provide, at any hour.
